Harvest NotesSeptember 24th2013

TomatoesAllow these tomatoes to ripen on your counter. They are ready to eat when they are red and tender to the touch.

Dill Don’t forget that you can dry your dill if you decide not to use it this week.

Salad MixOur gourmet mix of tender baby salad greens is back for the cool season! There are baby lettuces and mustards in this triple-washed, ready-to-eat mesclun mix.  Store the salad dry in a loosely open bag in the crisper of your fridge.

Green Peppers Some of these are still fully green and some have a red tinge to them because they were on their way toward turning red when we rescued them from the cold weather.

Sweet Red Peppers Both the long slender sweet peppers and the blocky ones are delicious roasted, sauteed, or raw.

Hot Peppers Each member can choose from a mix of jalapenos and cayenne. The cayenne are a bit spicier and dry better than the jalapenos.

LeeksThis is the last of the season’s leeks. Here are a few ideas of what to do with them.

Kohlrabi It may look like an alien but it is delicious! Kohlrabi tastes and crunches a lot like a broccoli stem but it is juicier. You can roast it or sautee it but the simplest use is to simply eat it raw. This vegetable is often a big hit with kids when sliced like carrot sticks. The leaves store about as well as kale does (and taste very similar) but the kohlrabi itself will last for months in the crisper of your fridge.

Tomatillos These are the main ingredient in salsa verde, the green and tangy salsa you can often find in Mexican cuisine.

GarlicThe garlic is now fully dried out and should store well out of the fridge.
