Harvest NotesOctober 10th2013

Its a great week for stir-fry!

Totsoi This lush Asian green really wears the vitamins and minerals encapsulated in its dark green leafiness like a badge of honor. It can be used like bok choi and goes well with some of the other Asian veggies in this week’s share whether raw or stir-fried.

Daikon Radish We grew a ten pound daikon radish this season and it has us inspired to try and grow the biggest one in the world next year. Preliminary research tells us that someone once grew a fifty-pounder so we have a little ways to go. We didn’t want to overwhelm you with the giants but we do hope you find a use for this healthy, Japanese radish whether it is in stir-fries, pickles, or salads. It will store very well in your fridge for weeks.

Jalapenos Even though we associate jalapenos with Mexican food, they work well in Asian stir-fries and other dishes.

Red Pepper Remember, the long thin red peppers are sweet, not spicy.

Eggplant Eggplant in October?! The good news for this tropical plant is that we are having a very warm early fall. The bad news is that we did not have long periods of sustained high temperatures this summer so the fruits are overall very small. This is the last eggplant delivery.

Cabbage If you are feeling a bit inundated with greens this is the one to leave in the fridge until you are ready for it. Cabbage stores well and is a favorite for all types of cuisine.

Salad Mix The baby lettuces didn’t grow back as quickly as the mustards so this week’s salad is sharper than the mix you had last week.

Mint Don’t forget that you can dry your herbs if you decide not to use them this week.

Tomatoes The last bits of summer!

ScallionsThese classics of Asian cuisine are great for stir-fries or as onion substitutes in many recipes.
