Harvest Notes October 24th 2013

Rainbow Carrots These honkers keep taking our breath away for both their size and color display. The greens can be useful for making soup stock.

Pink Beauty Radishes Salad radishes are back for fall! Enjoy them raw on salad or you can saute or roast them. The greens are a bit tough but brave chefs do find uses for them.

Salad Mix This is a mix of baby mustard greens like arugula, mizuna, and kale. Be sure to store the greens dry as locking moisture into the bag will cause them to go downhill quickly.

Red or Green Peppers Last night’s frost killed off the pepper plants in the field so we are glad to have harvested everything that was left earlier in the week.

Cayenne These peppers dry particularly well when hung on a string in a well ventilated room.

Escarole Escarole is a member of the chicory family, along with raddichio and frisee. It is common in France and at Shabbos dinner in the Isabella Freedman dining hall. Escarole is versatile and can be cooked quite simply.

Garlic Our bountiful garlic harvest continues to grace us with plenty of stinking roses.

Bok Choi Check out some of these creative recipes or make a simple salad or stir-fry.

Apples We harvest these from a nearby orchard that does not use spray anything at all on their trees. You will therefor notice some aesthetic blemishes, namely a discoloration called “fly speck” which does not affect the taste or quality of the apples.

Tomatoes I’ve said it before this season but this time I am 100% sure- these are the absolute last tomatoes of 2013!

Onions These troopers survived hail and flooding in the Sadeh. The small size of these pales in comparison to our giant onions from years past but their flavor is just as good. Unfortunately, due to the hail and flooding of early summer, we will not have nearly the quantity of onions to distribute this season as we had in the past.
